Abstract
This paper looks at the symbolism drawing on feminine imagery found in Theravada Buddhist literature and culture over the centuries, observing that existing dichotomies notes between Theravada and Mahayana do not apply once a comparable range of periods and genres is examined. The paper notes these findings may reflect differences between broader Theravada practice and centralised high-ranking institutionally representations of Theravada.
