An ethnography of music making on Chindo Island, South Korea, based on fieldwork conducted between 1982 and 1984. A division is made between percussion bands (nongak or p'ungmul), songs (for work, entertainment and death) and shaman rituals (in particular Ssikkim kut), their history, current state and preservation. Each genre is considered in its national perspective, tracing histories and uses.
