Abstract
Victor Lieberman’s two-volume work Strange Parallels is an important contribution to the study of how modern European states have emerged, the trajectory of supporting process of geography and demography, state formation, and cultural and religious development becoming fixed by about 1830. How much this changed “universal” reality prodded new understandings of geography and the realistic limits of political imaginaries remains unexamined. The present paper examines how these developments shaped European and indigenous geographic and cartographic encounters in West Africa and Western mainland Southeast Asia.
