Abstract
This article is concerned with reactions to an economic crisis, which struck the island state Mauritius when textile and garment manufacturers relocated their production to China, India and the African mainland. Based on the analysis of two public events which revealed stikingly different interpretations of the island's historical integration into global markets, a critique of “multi-sited ethnography” and its concept of globalisation and change is presented. Alternatively, this paper pleads for an actor-centered and historically informed understanding of change and continuity.
