Abstract
The article assesses the complex interrelationships that motivate, finance, and see a pagoda repair project to completion. Formalizing recording risks destroying the social cohesion generated through the activities of instigation, donation, designing, building, erecting, and consecrating needed to complete a pagoda repair. Whether in a village or city, renovation is not just a building upgrade but a significant mechanism connecting religious and lay communities. The process of renovation engages the wider public from the urban elite to artisans, builders, shopkeepers, and farmers. In a religious context, the dedicated space of the pagoda compound and the dana or charitable giving replenishes the teachings the structure.
