Abstract

The paper summarises the inter-regional networks of the ancient cities of Dawei, Tanintharyi Division, Lower Myanmar from the rise of Buddhist kingdoms in the first millennium CE to present day developments. The walled sites of Dawei have links to the early Buddhism Pyu and Bagan cultures of Upper Myanmar. During the 15th-18th century CE, unique large tin and lead coins produced in Dawei highlight the port’s trade and the abundant local natural resources. In addition to networks north of Dawei, artefacts suggest interchange with Kanchanaburi ‘Dvaravati’ sites and later to Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin dynasties. The review of Dawei’s chronology highlights the multiple maritime and overland routes crossing through the region that shed light on the distinctive artefacts of the ancient culture and the present day interest in developing the port for facilitating regional trade.
