Howard, Keith (2015) The Institutionalization of Korean Traditional Music (Gugak): Visible and Invisible Modes of Exchange. In: East Asian Business Ethics and History: New Institutionalism vs. Modes of Exchange, 6 February 2015, Seoul.
Abstract
This article explores the historical institutionalism inherent in Korea's National Gugak Centre and the circular exchange mechanisms of the gugak fraternity (schools, colleges, ensembles, orchestras, concerts). I distinguish between court and aristocratic traditions known in previous centuries to a small percentage of the Korean population from the more various min'gan traditions, and show how methodologies and practices developed for the former have been emulated by those within the latter.
