Hamzić, Vanja (2014) Gender and Islamic Criminal Law in Nigeria: The Zina Case of Ms Amina Lawal (Part 2 of the author’s lecture series ‘Crime in Islamic Legal Tradition: A Reapprisal’). In: Global Law and Economic Policy Workshop, Institute for Global Law and Policy (of Harvard Law School), January 2014, Hamad bin Khalifa University, Doha, Qatar.
Abstract
This lecture provides a case study for the previously-conducted general historical exploration of the fundamental tenets of Islamic criminal law. It introduces the pluralist legal system of Nigeria, with a particular focus on Muslim zina (adultery) laws, which were enacted in 1999 and 2000 in 12 northern Nigerian Muslim-majority federal states. The lecture focuses on legal, political and social controversies surrounding the introduction of zina laws, and the subsequent high-profile sharī'a trials on adultery charges of several Muslim women, most notably Ms Amina Lawal.
