Abstract

This chapter discusses the planning and implementation of low carbon development in the middle income country China, with a specific case study from the wind energy sector. Today China is the world’s largest wind energy manufacturer, has the world’s largest wind energy capacity and is a global leader in low carbon development. This has been achieved through strong government support and financing for domestic wind energy industries. This chapter discusses the emergence of China’s wind energy sector, its current status and key policies. The chapter concludes that China could potentially become a future world leader in low carbon development, at least in the wind energy sector.
