Abstract
A collection of nine essays on modern Nepali literature, eight of which were published between 1989 and 2007, with an introduction and index. Four essays investigate the treatment of particular themes (the portrayal of Gurkha soldiers, demands for democratic reform, migration to India and Bhutan, and constructions of an ideal Nepal), two focus on particular works (BP Koirala's novel 'Sumnima' and Devkota's poem 'Muna-Madan'), two describe periods in the creative lives of the poets Mohan Koirala and Bhupi Sherchan, and one analyses the Western construction of the Himalayan region as 'Shangri-la' and some local literary responses to this romanticism.
