Abstract
In four short chapters the documentary film (22 minutes) explores the role of masons in producing Djenné’s renowned architecture; their apprenticeship system and the importance of secret knowledge for making safe buildings; generational perspectives on changing conditions and circumstances that affect the building trade; and the masons’ experiences of travelling and building outside Mali, and their hopes for the future. The films were directed and produced for the exhibition, Mud Masons of Mali, opening August 31 2013 in the African Voices Hall Focus Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
