Abstract

This book constitutes a study of the role of international human encounter in the Edo Period - a time when Japan is often thought of as 'isolated' from world affairs. Five case studies are offered of moments on exchange, with an emphasis on the artistic and cultural legacy of such interactions. Since the Dutch East India Company was the sole European body in Japan at the time, its operatives are central to the story. The second part of the book examines the lives of some Europeans who had has a special and lasting impact on Japan
