Abstract

The text investigates a group of silver boxes of the 3rd/2nd century BC. The objects were found Chinese in Chinese elite tombs but their material and the lobed decoration mirrors Achaemenid designs. The article discusses the cultural background, the archaeological context and the technology, and suggests that they were not imported, but made in China. They served as exotic-looking luxuries for a culturally diverse elite.
