Abstract

The Shwedagon Pagoda situated on Singuttara Hill in the centre of Yangon, is traditionally believed to have existed during the lifetime of the Buddha. Some archaeological remnants of earlier periods have occasionally been found during renovation and reconstruction projects. However, no published reports exist of previous finds on this site, nor have there been archaeological excavations to prove whether the legendary origins of the stupa are accurate or not. However, this report on unexpected archaeological finds at the Shwedagon Pagoda, demonstrates that material evidence of different periods does exist, and that this evidence can be understood within its respective stratigraphic contexts, dating from as early as the 15th century.
