Marchand, Trevor H.J. (2007) 'Fortifying Futures on Blessed Foundations: masons, secrets and guarantees in Djenné.' Mande Studies, 7. pp. 89-98.
Abstract
The article introduces various forms of knowledge that Djenné masons employ in their professional activities, focussing on the secret knowledge that is used to make protective benedictions and guarantees. Two ethnographic case studies illustrate benedictions that are made for ensuring a mason’s personal safety, as well as the structural integrity of houses and the long-term protection of patrons. The concluding section addresses the role of secret knowledge in augmenting an individual mason’s reputation and in providing security in the mind of his public.
