Abstract
This chapter examines the relations and connections between the Palestinian factions and the Islamic Republic of Iran since the 1979 revolution. To provide a historical background, the genealogy of connections between the Palestinian movements and Iran are first traced. This chapter then contextualises the events that shape contemporary relations between the Palestinian movements and Iran. Specifically, it explores how certain Palestinian organisations (the Palestine Liberation Organization [PLO], Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad) established and developed paradiplomatic relations with Iran. Despite a growing body of literature, Palestine’s connections with the Islamic Republic of Iran remain unexplored. Ultimately this chapter aims to document the roots, rationales and the developments of the Palestinian connections with Iran and show how these connections shape the diminuendos of the Palestinian contemporary political landscape.
