Abstract
The thesis which I am going to present consists of three Sections. Section A serves as an introduction to the other two Sections by providing an institutional account of the Han-lin Academy. Section B goes into detailed description of the career patterns of the Han-lin members, the main source of materials for this Section mainly derived from biographies. Section C is a statistical analysis on some of the extra-bureaucratic and bureaucratic factors on advancement. More detailed information on the thesis as a whole is given in the Preface below.
