Abstract

Joola Kujireray is the Joola variety assocated with the village of Brin (Jire in Kujireray), located ca. 12km to the west of Ziguinchor, the main city of the Casamance region of Senegal. This chapter constitutes a concise description of the main aspects of the grammar of Joola Kujireray, taking in features such as phonological processes, verbal morphology, and noun classification, which are known to be of interest in Atlantic languages. Particular attention is paid to the noun classification system, whose organization is analysed using individual noun classes, noun class paradigms, and agreement patterns. In addition, the description takes into account the complex sociolinguistic situation in which Kujireray is spoken, and commentary on contact effects is provided at relevant points.
