Abstract

A short documentary /travelogue set to music by Abdullah Ibrahim and in dialogue with J. M. Coetzee's fictionalised autobiographical trilogy, Scenes from Provincial Life. The images were taken during my travels in the Western Cape in 2012, when Prince Albert was celebrating its 250th anniversary: Coetzee's ancestor Zacharias de Beer is singled out in local histories as one of the town's founders. Scenes include the farm Maraisdal, where Coetzee completed his first novel, Dusklands, and the outskirts of Voelfontein, the family farm referred to in Boyhood and Summertime.

Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice, University of Adelaide, the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas and other sponsors. In addition to the curated archives from the Harry Ransom Center, the exhibition included artworks by Sharon Zwi, Berlinde de Bruyckere and Lisa Harms.
