The chapter on “Political Economy,” Jingji 經濟, in Explorations into the Origins of Western Learning, Xixue tanyuan 西學探源, written in Chinese by the Japanese official-turned-educator and political writer Okamoto Kansuke 罔本監輔 (1839–1904) and published in 1901 by the Commercial Press in Shanghai, offers a curious explanation of the importance of this new scientific discipline.
