Abstract

The author currently conducts Master-Apprentice Initiative (MAI)-Ryukyus project from Summer 2019 to Summer 2023 as part of her PhD research based on Hinton’s Master-Apprentice Language Learning Program. In this article, she explores (1) new speakers' motivations to speak Ryukyuan languages, (2) language acquisition of non-standardized Ryukyuan languages without compromising their diversity, and (3) Ryukyuan (research) paradigm. Based on the interim findings, she discusses Ryukyuan language speakers' psychological traumas, how to promote Ryukyuan language competence and maintain the languages' diversity, what the Ryukyuan (research) paradigm would look like, and issues of the current Japanese government's administration on Ryukyuan languages.
