Rosário: Tambor e Fé (Rosary: Drum and Faith)
De Oliveira, Bosco
In this program we will look into one of the most fascinating Afro-Brazilian musical traditions: the Congado. Very popular in the State of Minas Gerais, in the SE of Brazil, the Congado is more than just a musical tradition; it is a way of life. Also known as Reinado (meaning reign or realm) it celebrates catholic saints and at the same time it honours ancestors and the King and Queen of Congo.

Trio Da Kali
Duran, Lucy
This is the debut release (extended play, five tracks only) of a new trio from Mali. The three musicians of Da Kali hail from the Mande culture of West Africa, from a heritage of distinguished griots (specialist hereditary musical artisans). Long-term collaborators, the artists aim to bring to the forefront neglected repertoires and performance styles of the griots, celebrating some of the African continent’s finest, most subtle and sublime music. The format of the trio recreates the kind of ensemble that would have been heard in Mali’s pre-colonial times. The album was arranged and produced by Lucy Duran for World Circuit Records

Anthropologist of landscape and religion Safet HadžiMuhamedović, author of WAITING FOR ELIJAH: Time and Encounter in a Bosnian Landscape (Berghahn Books), recently spoke with the NBN's Dino Kadich about topics addressed in the book. Find out more about karstic landscapes, (schizo)chronotopes, and the act of writing about time, space, landscape, and difference on the podcast.
Set in the beautiful, sprawling Field of Gacko in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, Safet HadžiMuhamedović’s book Waiting for Elijah: Time and Encounter in a Bosnian Landscape (Berghahn Books, 2018) takes readers through intimate encounters and syncretic moments as he and his interlocutors wait for Elijah’s Day. An annual festival that is shared by Muslims and Christians in the area, Elijah’s Day forms the basis for a “grand chrontope” that imbues time with meaning in the Field. Yet, the day—and the book—are about so much more, as HadžiMuhamedović writes skillfully across cosmologies, postwar life, and possibilities for resistance in other temporalities, analyzing social difference without reducing it. In addition to the traditional writing of an academic book, he includes a closing section called “The Georgics: An Extended Poetry of the Land,” which explores connections and moments that do not fit neatly into the conceptual foreclosure of scholarship but raise profound questions nonetheless.
Dino Kadich is an MPhil candidate in geography at the University of Cambridge. You can follow him on Twitter @dinokadich.

Civil Liberties Ignored: The UAPA Needs Reform (with Mayur Suresh)
Suresh, Mayur
Mayur Suresh talks to host Pavan Srinath about the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), and how thousands of Indians are in prison or in custody, without recourse to bail, and awaiting a trial that may never take place. Mayur discusses how the UAPA came about, how it absorbed some of the worst features of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and how it can be used without much judicial oversight, by governments and police forces in power.

Myanmar: Why peace remains elusive
Meehan, Patrick
After decades of military rule, Myanmar’s 2010 General Election appeared to be a watershed moment and inspired hopes that Myanmar was embarking upon what the World Bank dubbed as a ‘triple transition’: from authoritarian military rule to democratic governance, from a centrally directed economy to a market-oriented economy, and from 60 years of conflict to peace in the country’s border areas. The election of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2015, following a landslide victory for her National League for Democracy (NLD) Party, led to renewed hopes that a peaceful resolution could be found to the country’s longstanding armed conflict. Yet, alongside Myanmar’s formal peace process, the country’s ethnically-diverse border areas have experienced some of the worst violence for more than twenty-five years, notably the devastating army-led attacks against the country’s Rohingya population and renewed fighting in the northeast of the country in Kachin State and northern Shan State. This talk explores why peacebuilding efforts continue to face huge challenges despite the country’s democratic transition and formal peace process. Focusing predominantly on northern Myanmar’s borderlands with China, this talk emphasises the need to situate the current peace process within a deeper understanding of the contested and unresolved processes of state-building and to understand how the current peace process is founded upon the troubled legacy of decades of military rule, exclusionary nationalism and highly unequal power structures.

Tanner, Thomas
Rogan, Matthew
As COP26 arrives, SportsPro senior contributor Matt Rogan talks to SOAS’s Dr Tom Tanner centre director and programme director at the Centre for Development, Environment and Policy about how sports bodies can respond to the climate emergency.
Dr Tanner helps to define some of the central challenges facing sport and how concepts like ‘resilience’ will give structure to the fightback. He also discusses which sports are making progress and which need to take their response more seriously, how major events and sports seasons could change, and the tangible steps organisations can make that have a real, sustainable impact.

An anthropologist amongst big data: Making Sense with Prof Andrea Cornwall and Somnath Batabyal
Batabyal, Somnath
The world wide web is the largest repository of human footprint; the amount of data that is generated each second was unimaginable even a couple of decades ago. But data by itself is meaningless unless analysed and, very importantly, contextualised. Anthropologists have been in the business of gathering and understanding data for centuries. So, how has the role of the anthropologist changed/evolved in a world where there is more data than ever before and readily available. On this and so much more, Prof Andrea Cornwall, Pro Director (research) at SOAS joins fellow anthropologist Somnath Batabyal.

Shinzo Abe's Legacy and Japan's Future, with Satona Suzuki and Jeff Kingston
Suzuki, Satona
Japan's recently assassinated former prime minister Shinzo Abe was a leader who leaves behind a complex legacy. Internationally, he strengthened Japan's relationship with the US in ways unseen before. Closer to home, crucial good relations with South Korea dissipated. His attitude towards Japan's difficult history was sometimes praised as a readiness for neutrality, while others criticised this as denialist revisionism. In the weeks since Abe's death, Japanese citizens have also begun to grapple with the reality of how involved their political system has become with influential religious groups, too. To help unpack some of these issues and discuss how Japan will move forward, we're joined by two specialists in modern Japanese history, Satona Suzuki from SOAS, University of London, and Jeff Kingston from Temple University, Japan. Our host for this podcast is journalist and broadcaster Philippa Thomas.

Reflections on Spiritual Tourism and Journeys of Self-Discovery with Jens Augspurger [interviewed by Daillen Culver and Megan Douglas]
Augspurger, Jens Uwe
In this episode, we speak with Jens Augspurger, PhD candidate in Religious Studies at SOAS and a doctoral fellow of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German Academic Foundation). Jens takes us through his curvy research journey looking at ‘spiritual tourists’. He speaks about why we connect to certain places; self-discovery and ‘belonging’; the complexities of ‘cultural appropriation’ and acknowledging privilege; the challenges of researching your own communities; when research leads to cynicism; and why he chose to walk away from his yoga practice and finding contentment in stripping away ‘disillusionment’ through his research.

Prof Sanjay Srivastava and Dr Romit Chowdhury - Masculinities and City-Life in India and Beyond
Srivastava, Sanjay
GN Anthropology
How do different groups of men navigate urban life and enact masculinity in the bustling metropolises of contempory Indian society? In this special 30th episode, marking two years of Now and Men, we speak to Prof Sanjay Srivastava and Dr Romit Chowdhury about the ways in which male power and privilege is both threatened and re-asserted in different city spaces in India and beyond, considering issues such as nationalism, consumerism, violence against women, mobility, and relations between men. We discuss Sanjay's recent book, ‘Masculinity, Consumerism, and the Post-National Indian City: Streets, Neighbourhoods, Home’ (Cambridge University Press, 2022), and Romit's which comes out in August 2023, ‘City of Men: Masculinities and Everyday Morality on Public Transport’ (Rutgers University Press).

Terror Trials: Life and Law in Delhi’s Courts. Dr. Mayur Suresh in conversation with Neetika Vishwanath
Suresh, Mayur
In this podcast, Project 39A's Director (Sentencing) Neetika Vishwanath speaks to Dr. Mayur Suresh (Senior Lecturer, SOAS University of London) on his recently published book 'Terror Trials: Life and Law in Delhi's Courts'. The book is an ethnographic study of Delhi's Tis Hazari court over 14 months during which Dr. Suresh followed 18 terrorism trials. In this conversation, Dr. Suresh reflects on the relevance of ethnography as a method of legal research and the value of studying everyday life in trial courts. Looking beyond the exceptionalism framework in academia that is often used to describe terrorism laws and trials, ethnography allowed Dr. Suresh to capture ways in which terror accused use legal procedures and technicalities to engage with the law.

All guns blazing: the political messages of Chinese war films
Lu, Xiaoning
The highest grossing films at the Chinese box office are war movies. Wolf Warrior 1 and 2, and The Battle at Lake Changjin, portray heroic Chinese soldiers battling against foreign enemies, including the Americans. These big budget productions are overseen by an arm of the state known as the China Film Administration. Are they therefore a form or propaganda, or can they be defined as art? Dr Xiaoning Lu, a lecturer in Chinese culture and cinema at SOAS, shares her views on the political messages of the films, in conversation with Duncan Bartlett, Editor of Asian Affairs magazine.

Rebecca Ruth Gould on the Marc Steiner Show. Interview about Erasing Palestine.
Gould, Rebecca Ruth
The question of historical and present antisemitism is at the heart of Zionism, though not always in the ways supporters of Israel would believe. In the effort to shield Israel from criticism of occupation and apartheid, organizations such as the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance have attempted to advance a broad, sweeping definition of antisemitism that includes all criticism of Israel. Rebecca Ruth Gould, author of "Erasing Palestine: Free Speech and Palestinian Freedom," joins The Marc Steiner Show for a discussion on this trend and its implications for Palestinians, the progressive Jewish diaspora, and the wider politics of identity and racism.
