China Watching analyzes the state of European, Japanese and American scholarship on China over the last decade. The international team of contributors explore the main subjects and trends in research being done on contemporary Chinese politics, economy, foreign affairs and security studies. They contrast the substance and conclusions of this research in Europe, Japan, and the United States, contributing to topics that are hotly debated among China watchers worldwide. The book provides a unique insight into the world of China studies as well as China itself, and will appeal to those with an interest in Chinese politics, economics, foreign policy and security studies.enRoutledge978041541397838004850China Watching: Perspectives from Europe, Japan and the United StatesAsh, RobertShambaugh, DavidTakagi, Seiichirō2007otherNAhttp://doi.org/10.4324/9780203967751

This paper summarises preliminary findings of a contextually rich case study that explores the link between globalisation and security. Following a broad-based and multidisciplinary widener’s approach, the paper explores the strategic aspects of the migration of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry to China as part of the globalisation processes. Based on a triangulation of interviews and secondary data analysed thus far, the paper first explores the drivers of industry migration and the means by which Taiwanese state regulations are violated by related business operations. It then contends that these profit-driven activities have triggered multi-layered strategic challenges for Taiwan and the USA involving technological and defence security. Four inter-linked aspects of the strategic ramifications are analysed: (1) industrial base concerns; (2) technological risks associated with the dual-use nature of chip technology and the foreign supply of critical chips; (3) concerns reinforced by mainland Chinese institutional reforms and perceptions; (4) risks reinforced by the Taiwan factor. The paper concludes by calling for an embrace of a widener’s approach to the study of security.application/pdfhttps://eprints.soas.ac.uk/8225/1/Chu-China_Perspectives-2008-1.pdfenCentre d’études français sur la Chine contemporaine1996461748504600Controlling the Uncontrollable: The Migration of the Taiwanese Semiconductor Industry to China and its Security RamificationChu, Ming-chin Monique2008Journal Article/ReviewAOhttp://doi.org/10.4000/chinaperspectives.3343

The semiconductor industry is a vital industry for military establishments worldwide, and the control of, or loss of control of, this key industry has enormous strategic implications. This book focuses on the globalization of the strategic semiconductor industry and the security ramifications of this process. It examines in particular the migration of the Taiwanese chip industry to China as part of the globalization of production processes, and the extent to which such a globalization process poses security challenges to the United States, China and Taiwan. Transcending disciplinary boundaries between international political economy, security studies, and the history of science and technology, this multidisciplinary work provides an in-depth understanding of the globalization-security nexus, and disentangles the key policy issues connected to a potential explosive flashpoint in world politics today.enRoutledge978041556552348504600The East Asian Computer Chip WarChu, Ming-chin Monique2013-11-21BookNAhttp://doi.org/10.4324/9781315866727

This research attempts to tackle two of the principle questions prominent in the literature on candidate selection; namely how to classify candidate selection methods and how to explain change in candidate selection methods adopted. In other words, this is a detailed analysis of how and why Taiwanese candidate selection procedures have been adjusted since the late 1980s. A seven-point scale has been adopted to measure the degree of democratisation in candidate selection, in which 1 equals the most open democratic nomination system, while 7 equals a nomination method dictated by the party leader. The pendulum of Taiwan's inner party democracy has swung sharply in both directions since 1989. Although the KMT and DPP have both reached their most democratic procedures for selecting legislative candidates, there have been instances of a return to authoritarian nomination methods in all major parties, and strong resistance from party leaders to delegating greater nominating power to ordinary party members or supporters. It is argued that there have been two critical forces governing the direction of change; the internal variable of factional balance of power, and the external variable of election results. Party factions and leaders have not promoted more inclusive nomination methods out of ideological motivations. Instead nomination methods have been democratized or centralized when the dominant leader or faction has viewed such changes as promoting their own interests and power. In addition, parties have altered nominations me thods either in response to poor election results or with a view to improving future election prospects.
application/pdfhttps://eprints.soas.ac.uk/8586/1/Journal_of_Electoral_Studies.pdfenGuo li zheng zhi da xue xuan ju yan jiu zhong xin bian10257551851048504600Democratisation of Candidate Selection in Taiwanese Political PartiesFell, Dafydd2006-11Journal Article/ReviewAO

This paper examines how Taiwan moved from being viewed as a model Asian democracy to one allegedly suffering from democratic reversal. The reasons for the declining domestic and international reputa- tion of Taiwan’s democracy are discussed. This study applies the concept of critical elections to Taiwan’s recent political history. Instead of 2008, it is argued that 2005 deserves the title of a critical election. Politi- cal developments in 2005 laid the foundations for the Kuomintang’s return to politi- cal dominance.application/pdfhttps://eprints.soas.ac.uk/10596/1/Critical_elections.pdfenUniversity of California Press1533838X851046004850Was 2005 A Critical Election in Taiwan? After their defeat in the Chinese civil war, in 1949 the exiled Kuomintang (KMT) government fled to Taiwan and endeavoured to educate the baby-boomer generation on the island to become ‘true Chinese’. Geography education was one of the fundamental vehicles used by the KMT to construct a sense of Chinese identity and to create a longing for a Chinese motherland. This paper explores the ways in which a KMT-versioned ‘sense of place’ was constructed in elementary education, and investigates how the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘homeland’ were introduced and presented in school textbooks. The paper examines the geographic knowledge taught in Taiwan’s elementary schools (both through the content of textbooks and the design of curriculum) between 1945 and 1968 in order to understand the way in which the foundations of a China-centric identity were laid, and also how a Chinese homeland was constructed. The reason for taking 1968 as the cut-off point in this study is because ‘Geography’ as a stand-alone subject was removed from elementary education following curriculum reform.
In the process of reinforcing a sense of Chinese-ness, the relationship between the island and its inhabitants was sacrificed. The island became detached from the islanders and was turned into a meaningless flatscape. This paper argues that the rise of Taiwanese awareness in the 1990s has proven that an arbitrary construction of an inauthentic Chinese identity is both problematic and unsustainable.enSage14744740220046004850So Close, Yet So Far Away: Imaging Chinese "Homeland" in Taiwan’s Geography Education (1945-67)Chang, Bi-Yu2011-07Journal Article/ReviewNAhttp://doi.org/10.1177/1474474010384914

Since the 1990s the issue of identity has been one of the most prominent and hotly-debated topics in Taiwan Studies. A rich corpus of literature has been produced in various fields in the attempt to address this problematic issue, examining questions of Taiwanese identity from political, social and cultural perspectives. Imaging and Imagining Taiwan takes a fresh approach to this important topic, examining Taiwanese identity from a visual perspective and exploring the ways in which the island is presented and imagined. In contrast to those studies that seek to address the issue of identity from an essentialist position, Imaging and Imagining Taiwan offers a new contextualization of identity, investigating the ways in which Taiwan has been represented in films, fine art, advertising, sport, and social spaces at different periods in history. Covering a diverse range of topics, the book aims to capture the fluidity, changeability, fragmentation and dynamism of Taiwanese identity as an imaginary and encompassing whole. Through seven case studies the book focuses on the ways in which Taiwan is represented, how this relates to identity politics, and how the island is imaged and imagined visually, socially, and symbolically. The essays comprising this collection are grouped into three sections, each of which focuses on a particular approach to the topic of Taiwanese identity. The first of these —Colonial Representation —deals with colonial subjectivity and traumatic experience. The second, entitled Imaging Difference, examines cultural practices in film, TV advertisements and fine art, and explores the boundaries between the inside and the outside, the difference marked by the process of othering, and the anxiety and alienation of the excluded. The third section—Identity and Place—focuses on the relationship between identity and the social construction of place, and examines the role of place-making in the new Taiwanese nation-building process. Interrogating the complex issue of Taiwanese identity from various standpoints, the seven contributors write from a range of disciplinary backgrounds (Literature, History, Film Studies, Linguistics, Anthropology and Cultural Studies) and geographical contexts (Taiwan, Europe and America). This combination of fresh perspectives and a range of disciplinary approaches offers a set of diverse yet complementary insights into how Taiwan has been envisioned and imagined, and how the Taiwanese have positioned and identified themselves at different times. By combining different themes and disciplinary approaches together in one publication, Imaging and Imagining Taiwan brings both nuance and depth to the discussion of the representation of Taiwanese identity. The book articulates and examines the complexity of identity, avoiding essentialist approaches to the topic, instead illustrating identity's multi-faceted nature and dynamic messiness. Thus, the book argues, the politics of identity is not only a politics of representation, but also a politics of positioning, whereby identity is formulated both by the construction of sameness and the inscription of difference. The interdisciplinary approach adopted by this book makes the discussion of Taiwanese identity of interest to those both studying and working in a range of subject disciplines, not limited to Taiwan Studies, but also in History, Film, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Nationalism Studies, and Urban Studies.application/pdfhttps://eprints.soas.ac.uk/17305/1/2012%20_%20Imaging%20and%20Imagining%20Taiwan%20_%20introduction.pdfenHarrassowitz97834470667471550205122002300300485055005600700Imaging and Imagining Taiwan: Identity representation and cultural politicsChang, Bi-YuKlöter, HenningLiao, Hsien-hao SebastianMorris, AndrewBirtwistle, AndyLiu, Joyce Chi-huiLee, AnruChang, Bi-YuKlöter, Henning2012-08otherAO

The chapter examines the construction of a national landscape and the invention of a mythical origin for the islanders. As part of Taiwan’s nation-building project, a campaign was launched in 2001 to popularise Yushan (the highest mountain in East Asia) as a “sacred mountain” and to construct the Taiwanese as “children of Yushan.” The repositioning of Yushan (and, by extension, Taiwan) serves to remove the island from a China-centric framework and locates it instead within an Asia-pacific context. Metaphorically, the mountain has become a “site of resistance,” and has been transformed from a simple geographical feature into a representation of Taiwanese
origins, an ancestral home, and the wellspring of a long-forgotten identity. In doing so, this construction of a “sacred mountain” functions not only to nationalise landscape, but also to naturalise Taiwan independence.enHarrassowitz Verlag .
