Can phonation types be reliably measured from sound spectra? Some data from Wa and Burmese
Watkins, Justin
This paper assesses the value of measuring aspects of an unmodified acoustic recordings of speech in the two language Burmese (Tibeto-Burman) and Wa (Mon_Khmer) in relation to the glottal source, or phonation type.
This method faces the problem of how to ensure that what is measured is indeed attributable to the glottal source andnot to supralaryngeal acoustic shaping, or vowel quality.
The methods adopted include: analysis of the relative prominence of the H1 and H2, formant amplitude and spectral tilt.
The findings are that in Wa H2, F1 and F2 are all more energetic than H1 to a greater degree in creaky phonation than in breathy, though this is due in part to the significantly dominant H1 in breathy phonation.
For Burmese, the methods in this study are too crude to tell these two phonation types apart, but they are sufficient to identify the cruder three-way categorisation of phonation types (modal, creaky and breathy), which, it has been suggested, is sufficient to give a satisfactory account of phonologically contrastive phonation type for most purposes.
The findings suggest further that the relationship between the higher frequency region of the spectrum and phonation type merits further investigation.

A broader perspective on point of view: logophoricity in Ogonoid languages
Bond, Oliver
Logophoric marking in the Ogonoid family (Benue-Congo, Niger-Congo) differs significantly from most other logophoric reference systems in that these languages employ distinct verbal suffixes in logophoric domains, in addition to regular participant reference marking. This contrasts other known logophoric reference systems, which typically exhibit two sets of mutually exclusive pronouns, one logophoric and one non-logophoric. It has been commonly held in the literature that the function of logophoric pronouns is not to disambiguate coreference of clausal arguments, but to indicate the expression of a point of view distinct from that articulated using non-logophoric personal pronouns. In this paper, the properties of logophoric reference in Gokana (Hyman and Comrie 1981) and Kana (Ikoro 1996) are introduced before discussing new data from Eleme. Evidence is presented that point of view does not play a role in the use of logophoric marking in Eleme. Rather, it is argued that the logophoric trigger is determined by the interaction of person, number and grammatical relation hierarchies allowing for the development of a unique and comparably pervasive system of coreference.

Languages of Dress in the Middle East
Considers how the languages of dress in the region connect with other social practices, and with political and religious conformity in particular. Treating cases as diverse as practices of veiling in Oman and dress reform laws in Turkey, these ethnographic studies extend from Malta to the ME and Caucasus.

Najdi Arabic: Central Arabian
Ingham, Bruce
The region of Najd in Central Arabia has always been regarded as inaccessible, ringed by a belt of sand deserts, the Nafūd, Dahana and the Rub’ al-Khāli and often with its population at odds with the rulers of the outer settled lands. It is however the centre of a purely Arabian culture based on a partnership between bedouin camel husbandry and settled palm cultivation. Possibly as a result of overpopulation the bedouin have periodically spread over into the lands of the Fertile Crescent. Because of their isolated position the Najdi dialect is of a very interesting and archaic type showing very little non-Arabic influence, which has led to the reputation of the Arabian bedouin as preservers of the original Classical form and considerable prestige being attached to the Najdi type. Consequently the region is a powerhouse of dialect influence so that Najdi based dialects are spoken all along the Gulf Coast and throughout most of the Syrian Desert. Interest in these dialects has led to a number of recent studies of their oral literature and of the morphology and phonology. Ingham's work concentrates on the grammatical system, syntax and usage and is based on a number of trips to the region over the last fifteen years. The data base includes bedouin oral narrative, ordinary conversation and radio plays.

The grammaticalization of formal nouns and nominalizers in Chinese, Japanese and Korean
Simpson, Andrew
Zoe, Xiu-Zhi
This paper focuses on the syntactic status of three elements which can be shown to have strikingly similar distributions in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, the morphemes de, no and kes, and attempts to see how both the similarities and the differences in the distribution of these elements can be given a unified account. The suggestion is made that the similarities and the differences in the patterns found can be systematically explained if it is assumed that the three elements are all essentially of the same type in origin but synchronically in different stages of grammaticalization and syntactic change. The paper also introduces and argues for a formal movement-based model of grammaticalization and shows how such an approach is able to capture the apparently gradual nature of syntactic change in a possibly more precise way than traditional feature-based cline descriptions. Applied here to the delnolkes paradigm, the approach allows for a new understanding of the development of formal nouns and functional categories in the NP/DP, and also results in an interesting prediction concerning the existence of double nominalizers which appears to be borne out by various cross-linguistic patterns.

Wh-movement and the Theory of Feature-checking
Simpson, Andrew
Wh-movement and the theory of feature-checking argues that cross-linguistic variation in wh-constructions reduces to the availability of different lexical instantiations of a +wh C0 both across languages and within a single language, and the way in which such lexical elements are syntactically identified, either via movement or base-generation. Evidence from a wide range of patterns including wh-expletive questions leads to the conclusion that wh-feature checking may sometimes be effected non-locally and 'at a distance' (long-distance wh-agreement), and that movement in general takes place for two related but discrete reasons: both to identify and activate an underspecified licensing head and in order for an element to occur in the checking domain projected by its relevant licensing head. Developing and generalizing the proposals beyond wh-phenomena, the study also goes on to argue for a Minimalist model of syntax in which feature-dependencies are in fact all licensed in the overt syntax and where there is no need for any further level of LF.

English-Lakota Dictionary
Ingham, Bruce
PM Hyperborean, Indian, and Artificial languages
This dictionary of 12,000 entries aims to preserve Indian culture and at all points illustrate the use of words in examples, especially syntactic words, whose usage cannot be captured purely by giving an English equivalent. It provides depth as regards the usage of frequently occurring items and especially in the use of syntactic elements and usage in context.

A Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir
Nikolaeva, Irina
The Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir has two main purposes.
First, it is intended as a relatively complete source of information on the lexicon of Yukaghir. Tundra and Kolyma Yukaghir are closely related, highly endangered languages spoken in the extreme North-East of Siberia. No modern comprehensive lexicographic description of these languages is available for the international linguistic community. The dictionary presents all known varieties of Yukaghir in comparative format. Some of the materials included come from published sources, others were obtained by the author through fieldwork and are published for the first time. The dictionary also contains examples of now extinct early forms of Yukaghir, which began to be recorded in the late 17th century. Second, the dictionary provides a first reconstruction of the common ancestor of all known Yukaghir varieties. The proto-Yukaghir stems are established based on internal reconstruction, comparison between various Yukaghir idioms, and external data. Although the dictionary does not attempt to provide etymologies for all Yukaghir words, it includes possible cognates of some Yukaghir stems from other languages, mainly Uralic and Altaic. Since Yukaghir forms are not only cited in their modern shape but are reconstructed, the dictionary will provide a foundation for future etymological work and contribute to investigating the genetic affiliation of Yukaghir, usually classified as isolated. The book will also be useful for linguists interested in the distant genetic relations between language families and the reconstruction of the ethnic and linguistic situation in prehistoric northern Asia.

Korean Honorification: A Kind of Expressive Meaning
Sells, Peter
Kim, Jong-Bok
Honorification in Korean recognizes the elevated social status of a participant in a clause with respect to the subject and/or the hearer. Honorific marking may be manifest as a nominal suffix, a special honorific form of a noun, an honorific case particle, an honorific marker on a verb, or a special honorific form of a verb. Previous accounts have typically proposed a honorification feature specified as [HON +], with unmarked forms being [HON -]. The key idea in this paper is that these approaches are misguided and that honorification is a privative feature, syntactically and semantically. On the syntactic side, we argue that the frequently adopted position that honorific marking in Korean is a kind of subject-verb agreement is deeply misguided. Few previous accounts succeed with regard to the full range of facts, which are of three types. First, multiple expressions of honorific marking within the same clause progressively elevate the social status of the referent: the effect is cumulative, which [HON ±] cannot describe. Second, under previous analyses, some nouns have to be given a spurious and ultimately inconsistent ambiguity with respect to their honorific properties. Third, the different expressions of “honorification” do not mean exactly the same thing, which makes an account of multiple honorification within a clause in terms of agreement implausible. On the semantic side, we, building on ideas in Potts (The logic of conventional implicatures. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2005) and Potts and Kawahara (Proceedings of semantics and linguistic theory. CLC Publications, Ithaca, NY, pp. 235-254, 2004), propose that honorific forms introduce a dimension of meaning in the realm of expressive meaning. As a kind of expressive meaning, Expressive meaning honorification is simply absent from all forms which are not positively marked for expressing it.

It discusses the nature and inter-relationship of identity, ethnicity and culture, and their roles in language choice and attitudes, relating these to the ethnolinguistic vitality of the indigenous language in Guernsey.
It is often assumed in discourse on language endangerment that language plays an significant part in identity, but this view is not necessarily consistent with the language shift taking place in many places around the world. This paper considers to what extent language shift entails the loss of part of speakers' identity, and the role of identity in language maintenance.

Stylistic Fronting in Icelandic: A Base-Generated Construction
Sells, Peter
In this paper I present a base-generated analysis of Stylistic Fronting in Icelandic, assimilating the construction to a sub-type of V2. I argue that the base-generated approach provides an account of many of the properties of Stylistic Fronting that have been elusive under previous (transformational) accounts, and does so without the need for extra projections or extra mechanisms. The analysis is presented in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar, which allows flexibility of head-positioning without recourse to movement operations.
