A rapid expansion of translation programmes at all levels the world over in recent years has heightened the demand for quality translation teachers. However, little research has been carried out to date on translation teacher training – M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes of translation studies in tertiary institutions despite a plethora of studies on general translation teaching. The present study, intended as an initial attempt to address the issue, approaches the topic from a teacher education perspective and looks critically at the knowledge structure of translation teachers. On this basis, the present article reports on a qualitative case study conducted in 2004-2007 on the curriculums and particularly the needs and experiences of the research students at the M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes of translation studies in Hong Kong. Although the study was conducted in the context of Hong Kong, the findings and implications may apply to other translation teacher training programmes the world over.enÉrudit0026045220533100Knowledge Structure and Training of Translation Teachers: An Exploratory Study of Doctoral Programmes of Translation Studies In Hong Kong.Li, DefengZhang, Chunling2011-09Journal Article/ReviewNAhttp://doi.org/10.7202/1008340ar

This study is to investigate the translator's fingerprints as manifested in his/her style in translation. It reports a case study of two Chinese translations of Ulysses, adopting a corpus-based approach. The parallel subcorpora of the self-built Bilingual Corpus of Ulysses (BCU) consist of Joyce's Ulysses and its two Chinese versions produced by Xiao (1994 Tran. Ulysses, Nanjing: Yilin Press) and Jin (1997 Tran. Ulysses, Beijing: People's Literature Publishing House), respectively, and the comparable subcorpora include Xiao's original writings in Chinese. The comparison of the keyword lists shows that Xiao, the literary writer and translator, leaves some traces of lexical idiosyncrasy in his composition and translation. On the syntactic level the comparison reveals that due to the interference of the English language Xiao post-positions more adverbial clauses in translation than in composition, a feature that distinguishes the translated text from non-translated original writing. This indicates that the fingerprints of the translator are left on the translated text both as a result of his/her linguistic idiosyncrasy and of the interference and constraints of the languages s/he is dealing with in translation.enOxford University Press0268114520533100Looking for Translator’s Fingerprints: A Corpus-based Study on Chinese Translations of Ulysses.Wang, QingLi, Defeng2011-10-29Journal Article/ReviewNAhttp://doi.org/10.1093/llc/fqr039

In line with the growing interest in the social constructivist approach to translator training, this article proposes that task-based teaching (TBT), a method initiated and popularized in the field of second language instruction, should be adopted in business translator training. However, given the considerable differences between teaching a second language and training translators, adjustments will have to be made to the TBT methodology to enable its application in the translation classroom (Gonzalez Davis 2004). It is proposed here that task cycles in translator training consist of six stages, including pretask, task, reporting, analysis, revising and reflection. While the adoption of this model may pose challenges for translation teachers and students, these are outweighed by the advantages of TBT, an approach that (1) shifts the focus from teaching to learning, (2) draws students’ attention to the translation process, (3) develops reflective practices among students, and (4) most important of all, activates and develops translation competence, the ultimate goal of all translation training programmes.enTaylor and Francis1757041720533100Teaching Business Translation: A Task-based ApproachLi, Defeng2013-03Journal Article/ReviewNAhttp://doi.org/10.1080/13556509.2013.10798841
