The Empire of Enterprise: Scottish Business Networks in Asian Trade, 1793-1810 (UNSPECIFIED)
The rise of British rule in India in the late eighteenth century was accompanied by the emergence of extensive business networks based on London, Calcutta and Canton. These networks, which organised the private trade of British civilians and military personnel in India, linked the export and import economies of Bengal, Madras, Java, the Philippines, the Malay peninsula and southern China, and came to dominate much of the regional trade of the Indian Ocean, as well as its links to Europe. Many of those engaged in this activity were Scots, and the connections between them - based in part on kinship - provided the institutional setting for the remittance of private money from Asia to Europe. While the activities of the East India Company provided an important part of the setting for these activities, much of them also depended on private enterprise and non-official networks. As a result, the volume of capital remitted from Bengal to Britain during the 1790s and 1800s was much larger than has previously been estimated.

HTML Summary of #567
Gandhi
Gandhi's is an extraordinary and compelling story. Few individuals in history have made so great a mark upon their times. And yet Gandhi never held high political office, commanded no armies and was not even a compelling orator. His 'power' therefore makes a particularly fascinating subject for investigation. David Arnold explains how and why the shy student and affluent lawyer became one of the most powerful anti-colonial figures Western empires in Asia ever faced and why he aroused such intense affection, loyalty (and at times much bitter hatred) among Indians and Westerners alike. Attaching as much influence to the idea and image of Gandhi as to the man himself, Arnold sees Gandhi not just as a Hindu saint but as a colonial subject, whose attitudes and experiences expressed much that was common to countless others in India and elsewhere who sought to grapple with the overwhelming power and cultural authority of the West.

The Age of Discovery 1400-1600 (2nd edition)
The Age of Discovery explores one of the most dramatic features of the late medieval and early modern period: when voyagers from Western Europe led by Spain and Portugal set out across the world and established links with Africa, Asia and the Americas. This book examines the main motivations behind the voyages and discusses the developments in navigation expertise and technology that made them possible. This second edition brings the scholarship up to date and includes two new chapters on the important topics of the idea of "discovery" and on biological and environmental factors which favoured or limited European expansion.

Traders, big men and prophets: political continuity and crisis in the Maji Maji rebellion in Southeast Tanzania (UNSPECIFIED)
This article places the origins of the Maji Maji rebellion in Southeast Tanzania within the context of tensions between coast and interior, and between ‘big man’ leaders and their followers, which grew out of the expansion of trade and warfare in the second half of the nineteenth century. Without discounting its importance as a reaction against colonial rule, the paper argues that the rebellion was driven also by the ambitions of local leaders and by opposition to the expansion of indigenous coastal elites. The crucial role of the ‘Maji’ medicine as a means of mobilization indicates the vitality of local politics among the ‘stateless’ people of Southeast Tanzania.

HTML Summary of #610
The Economic Crisis and Rebellion in Rural Burma in the Early 1930''s
In the final days of December 1930, an insurrection broke out in the Tharrawaddy District of Lower Burma, north of the capital, Rangoon.1 Its leader was Hsaya San, who at various times in his life (he was then 48) had been a wandering fortune-teller, a se saya (Burmese medical practitioner), a pongyi (Buddhist monk) and the operator of illegal lotteries, before, in the mid-1920s, becoming involved in the nationalist General Council of Burmese Associations, later in its radical So Thein faction. In raising the rebellion, Hsaya San presented himself as the Setkya-Min the powerful and benevolent ruler who, according to Burman belief, would appear at the end of Buddhism’s age of decline (widely interpreted to be the period of British rule) to restore the moral order and prepare mankind for the coming of the Buddha Maitreya (Embryo or Future Buddha). In those last days of 1930 the rebels raided villages to secure firearms, before attacking police stations, military posts, railway lines and telegraph installations. A number of village headmen and lone European officials were killed. On 31 December government forces attacked the rebel headquarters. Hsaya San fled north, while those of his followers who had avoided capture or death scattered into the surrounding areas. However, any hope the authorities may then have held that the insurrection had been broken was almost immediately lost. In early January minor disturbances took place in Yamethin, on the southern fringe of the Dry Zone, quickly succeeded by a major rising in Pyapon District, in the coastal delta south of Rangoon. In the months which followed there were serious outbreaks in many parts of the Lower Burma delta, the last major rising taking place in Pegu District, north-east of Rangoon, in late September 1931. Meanwhile Hsaya San had reappeared to lead a rising in the Shan States, in the far northeast. Over the course of the rebellion, 12 of Burma’s 20 districts were in disorder. In addition to the coordinated attacks on villages, government offices and railway lines, the disturbances involved bursts of communal violence between Burmese and Indians, and widespread spoliation by gangs of dacoits. Around 9000 rebels were arrested or captured, 3000 killed or wounded, and 350 convicted and hanged, including Hsaya San himself. The British administration was forced to import two divisions from India to strengthen the local military, and it took until mid-1932 to root out the last of the resistance. This was a major uprising.

Approaching Transnationalism: Studies on Transnational Societies, Multicultural Contacts and Imaginings of Home
The term 'transnationalism' has gained considerable academic and popular currency despite a lack of clear definitions, in part because its overall form changes as its influence incorporates additional spheres of daily life on a variety of scales and contexts. The purpose of this volume is to bring together different perspectives on this phenomenon, using case studies that represent some of the most current thinking on 'transnationalism' in a wide range of disciplines. Central themes which this book explores include legal and economic reactions to transnational migration; the (re)negotiation of identities in the context of changing national, social and cultural identities; and the emergence of new imaginings of home and social space in transnational communities. Approaching Transnationalisms: Studies on Transnational Societies, Multicultural Contacts and Imaginings of Home foregrounds powerful transnational forces crossing the boundaries of nation-states, and at the same time, gives attention to the continued significance of the nation-state and the diversity of localized reactions to transnational challenges.

Chinese Migrants Abroad: Cultural, Educational and Social Dimensions of the Chinese Diaspora
Fast-paced economic growth in Southeast Asia from the late 1960s until the mid-1990s brought increased attention to the overseas Chinese as an economically successful diaspora and their role in this economic growth. Events that followed, such as the transfer of Hong Kong and Macau to the People's Republic of China, the election of a non-KMT government in Taiwan, the Asian economic crisis and the plight of overseas Chinese in Indonesia as a result, and the durability of the Singapore economy during this same crisis, have helped to sustain this attention. The study of the overseas Chinese has by now become a global enterprise, raising new theoretical problems and empirical challenges. New case studies of overseas Chinese, such as those on communities in North America, Cuba, India, and South Africa, continually unveil different perspectives. New kinds of transnational connectivities linking Chinese communities are also being identified. It is now possible to make broader generalizations of a Chinese diaspora, on a global basis. Further, the intensifying study of the overseas Chinese has stimulated renewed intellectual vigor in other areas of research. The transnational and transregional activities of overseas Chinese, for example, pose serious challenges to analytical concepts of regional divides such as that between East and Southeast Asia. Despite the increased attention, new data, and the changing theoretical paradigms, basic questions concerning the overseas Chinese remain. The papers in this volume seek to understand the overseas Chinese migrants not just in terms of the overall Chinese diaspora per se, but also local Chinese migrants adapting to local societies, in different national contexts.

The global coffee economy in Africa, Asia and Latin America, 1500-1989
Coffee beans grown in Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, or one of the other hundred producing lands on five continents remain a palpable and long-standing manifestation of globalization. For five hundred years coffee has been grown in tropical countries for consumption in temperate regions. This 2003 volume brings together scholars from nine countries who study coffee markets and societies over the last five centuries in fourteen countries on four continents and across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with a special emphasis on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The chapters analyse the creation and function of commodity, labour, and financial markets; the role of race, ethnicity, gender, and class in the formation of coffee societies; the interaction between technology and ecology; and the impact of colonial powers, nationalist regimes, and the forces of the world economy in the forging of economic development and political democracy.

The coffee crisis in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, 1870-1914
The success of New World coffee producers in the late nineteenth century has spawned a large body of writings, whereas stagnation and decline in Asia and Africa have attracted few scholars. Statistics for the early nineteenth century are rare and unreliable, but they suggest that Asia and Africa's share of global coffee exports amounted to around a third in the 1830s. This proportion remained roughly the same in the 1860s and 1870s. However, it then rapidly dwindled to around a twentieth by 1913. Within this broad evolution, there was an additional contrast. Asia was subject to a particularly sharp fall, whereas Africa's small share of the world market remained fairly constant in relative terms. When the focus is further narrowed to particular countries or regions within large and diverse countries such as Indonesia and India, outcomes were even more diverse. This chapter explores both the reasons for the overall downward trend in Africa and Asia's share of world coffee exports and the causes of the extraordinarily uneven nature of that decline. The evolution of world production took place against a background of increasing volatility in the real price of coffee. The world price rose fairly steadily from the late 1840s to reach a peak in the first half of the 1870s, making coffee the “wonder crop” of tropical farmers around the globe.
