A Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir
Nikolaeva, Irina
The Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir has two main purposes.
First, it is intended as a relatively complete source of information on the lexicon of Yukaghir. Tundra and Kolyma Yukaghir are closely related, highly endangered languages spoken in the extreme North-East of Siberia. No modern comprehensive lexicographic description of these languages is available for the international linguistic community. The dictionary presents all known varieties of Yukaghir in comparative format. Some of the materials included come from published sources, others were obtained by the author through fieldwork and are published for the first time. The dictionary also contains examples of now extinct early forms of Yukaghir, which began to be recorded in the late 17th century. Second, the dictionary provides a first reconstruction of the common ancestor of all known Yukaghir varieties. The proto-Yukaghir stems are established based on internal reconstruction, comparison between various Yukaghir idioms, and external data. Although the dictionary does not attempt to provide etymologies for all Yukaghir words, it includes possible cognates of some Yukaghir stems from other languages, mainly Uralic and Altaic. Since Yukaghir forms are not only cited in their modern shape but are reconstructed, the dictionary will provide a foundation for future etymological work and contribute to investigating the genetic affiliation of Yukaghir, usually classified as isolated. The book will also be useful for linguists interested in the distant genetic relations between language families and the reconstruction of the ethnic and linguistic situation in prehistoric northern Asia.

Guernsey French, identity and language endangerment
Sallabank, Julia
P Philology. Linguistics
This chapter looks examines the effects of identity on revitalization efforts in the context of a small and dwindling language community. It discusses the nature and inter-relationship of identity, ethnicity and culture, and their roles in language choice and attitudes, relating these to the ethnolinguistic vitality of the indigenous language in Guernsey.
It is often assumed in discourse on language endangerment that language plays an significant part in identity, but this view is not necessarily consistent with the language shift taking place in many places around the world. This paper considers to what extent language shift entails the loss of part of speakers' identity, and the role of identity in language maintenance.

Naming action in Japanese: Effects of semantic similarity and grammatical class
Iwasaki, Noriko
Vinson, David P.
Vigliocco, Gabriella
Watanabe, Masumi
Arciuli, Joanne
This study investigated whether the semantic similarity and grammatical class of distracter words affects the naming of pictured actions (verbs) in Japanese. Three experiments used the picture-word interference paradigm with partici-
pants naming picturable actions while ignoring distracters. In all three experiments, we manipulated the semantic similarity between distracters and targets (similar vs. dissimilar verbs) and the grammatical class of semantically
dissimilar distracters (verbs, verbal nouns, and also nouns in Experiment 3) in addition to task demands (single word naming vs. phrase/sentence generation). While Experiment 1 used visually presented distracters, Experiment 2 and 3
used auditory distracter words to rule out possible confounding factors of orthography (kanji vs. hiragana). We found the same results for all three experiments: robust semantic interference in the absence of any effects of
grammatical class. We discuss the lack of grammatical class effects in terms of structural characteristics of the Japanese language.

What do English speakers know about gera-gera and yota-yota?: A cross-linguistic investigation of mimetic words for laughing and walking
Iwasaki, Noriko
Vinson, David P.
Vigliocco, Gabriella
The relation between word form and meaning is considered arbitrary; however, Japanese mimetic words, giseigo and gitaigo , are exceptions. For giseigo (words mimicking voices), there is a direct resemblance(‘iconicity’) between the sound of the word and the sound it refers to; for gitaigo (words that mimic manners/states) there is a symbolic relationship (‘sound symbolism’) between the
sound and the manner/state to which the word refers. While native speakers intuitively recognize these relationships, it is questionable whether speakers of other languages are able to access the meaning of Japanese mimetic words from their sounds. In the current study, we asked native English
speakers with no prior experience with the Japanese language to listen to Japanese mimetic words for laughing (giseigo) and for walking (gitaigo), and rate each word’s meaning on semantic differential scales (e.g.,“GRACEFUL-VULGAR”(laughing,“GRACEFUL-CLUMSY”(walking). We compared English and Japanese speakers’ ratings and found that English speakers construed many of the features of laughing in a similar manner as Japanese native speakers (e.g., words containing /a/ were rated as more amused, cheerful, nice and pleasant laughs). They differed only with regard to a few sound-meaning relationships of an evaluative nature (e.g., words for laughing containing /u/ were
rated as more feminine and graceful, and those containing /e/ were rated as less graceful and unpleasant). In contrast, for the words referring to walking, English speakers’ ratings differed greatly from native Japanese speakers’. Native Japanese speakers rated words beginning with voiced consonants as referring to a big person walking with big strides, and words beginning with voiceless consonants as more even-paced, feminine and formal walking; English speakers were sensitive only to the relation between voiced consonants and a big person walking. Hence, some sound-meaning associations were language-specific. This study also confirmed the more conventional and lexicalized nature of the mimetic words of manner.

How does it hurt, kiri-kiri or siku-siku? Japanese mimetic words of pain perceived by Japanese speakers and English speakers
Iwasaki, Noriko
Vinson, David P.
Vigliocco, Gabriella
This study examines the extent to which English speakers with no prior experience of learning Japanese can infer the meanings of Japanese mimetic words of pain. In so doing, we uncover both cross-linguistically shared (possibly universal) and language-specific aspects of sound symbolism present in the Japanese mimetic words. We found that English speakers interpreted reduplicated words very similarly to Japanese speakers in many semantic dimensions (aching, bothering, continuous, affecting wide areas), suggesting the potentially universal effect of reduplication. In contrast, only Japanese speakers are consistently sensitive to voiced-voiceless consonant contrasts (associating words beginning with voiced consonants as more intense, aching, suppressing, and numbing pain). It is important to distinguish between Japanese language-specific sound symbolism and sound symbolism shared between Japanese and the learners’ first language when teaching Japanese as a second/foreign language.

Case Particle Errors in Japanese: Is the Nominative ga a Default Case Marker in Sentence Production?
Iwasaki, Noriko
This study examines experimentally induced case particle errors in Japanese. It was found that the nominative ga was the preferred particle for sentence-initial NPs and was the most frequently overused particle for argument NPs, providing some support to the claim that ga is a default marker. The study also shows that case particle error occurrence depends on verb type, suggesting the importance in future studies of experimentally controlling or manipulating the number of opportunities for speakers to produce NPs occurring with specific verb types.

Japanese Children’s Acquisition of the Accusative Case: Evidence for an Interim Stage Preceding Morphological Case Acquisition
Iwasaki, Noriko
This study investigates the acquisition of the accusative marker o and case-marker drop among 2- to 3-year old Japanese children. Experiment 1 tested children’s comprehension of ga, o, and case-marker drop (indicated as ‘Ø’ below) in Wh-questions and that of ga and o in Yes/No questions. The results indicate that, while many children tended to incorrectly interpret both NP-o and NP-Ø as the agent of actions, children who correctly interpreted NP-o as patient also tended to correctly interpret NP-Ø as patient. Children in the latter group appeared to have syntactic knowledge of case-marker drop. Experiment 2
additionally used a pseudo-particle, –u, in order to test whether children who correctly interpret NP-o and NP-Ø as patient (1) have a knowledge of morphological case (the accusative case-marker o) as well as the syntactic constraints of its drop, or (2) have partial knowledge of the case-markers and grammatical relations (along with knowledge of the syntactic constraints of case-marker drop). Results indicate that some of the children in the current study can be characterized as (2). This is taken as evidence that there is a stage where children have come to
understand the grammatical functions of case-markers without having a fully developed knowledge of morphological case.

Style shifts among Japanese learners before and after study abroad in Japan: Becoming active social agents in Japanese
Iwasaki, Noriko
Previous studies on L2 Japanese sojourners often reported that learners overuse the plain style or haphazardly mix the plain and polite styles upon return. These styles, which are often associated with formal or informal contexts, also index complex social and situational meanings, and native speakers are reported to shift their styles to create desired contexts. In order to better understand L2 development of the use of the plain and polite styles during study abroad, the current study examined the use of the polite/plain styles and style shifts among five English-speaking male students who studied in Japan for one academic year by comparing their performances both quantitatively and qualitatively in oral proficiency interviews before and after they studied abroad. Upon return, three predominantly used the polite style talking to the interviewer (their former teacher), while two primarily used the plain style. Though the quantitative analysis may lead one to conclude that these two students regressed in their pragmatic competence, the qualitative analysis revealed that all five learners gained some understanding of social meanings of the plain and polite styles and became more active social agents who make decisions to shift the styles.

Language maintenance in friendships: second-generation German, Greek, and Vietnamese migrants
Winter, Joanne
Pauwels, Anne
Our contribution explores the language maintenance (LM) patterns of children of migrants (second-generation) to Australia from three ethnolinguistic groups — German, Greek, and Vietnamese — in their same-age peer friendships. Focusing on the affective social relationship of “friendship” imagined as a dynamic fluid site of independence and a locale for identity formation, we scrutinize it as a pressure point for LM. The macro survey trends indicate that languages other than English (LOTE) are used in the friendship domain but with differing participations. Follow-up in-depth interviews reveal subtleties and complexities for LM practices. Co-presence of bilingual others in friendships proves to be a minimum but not sufficient condition for LM, particularly for German men and Greek women. Hyphenated belongings — for example, Vietnamese-, Greek-, German-Australians — construct varying LM alignments that reflect shared histories and authenticities (the migration experience) and the localizing of settlement (Australia).
