Abstract

The aim of this paper is analysing how the touristic image of Spain has been created throughout print and television advertising and how this discourse has been adopted cinematographically in the film Andarushia Megami no Hōfuku (Hiroshi Nishitani, 2011). It must be taken into account that the studied imagery of Spain is necessarily restricted as it has been designed with a specific intention: persuading and astonishing Japanese audience by selecting elements from Spanish society, culture or history, which are not explained but used to produce an otherness effect. Thus, determining which the role of stereotypes and exoticism as an advertising strategy has been is the axis of this research. Apparently, far from delving into the socio-economic problems of the country, its cultural plurality and its identity contradictions, Spain is presented as a bucolic set composed by carefully selected elements in order to strengthen a decontextualized image, separated from its social reality. Once these elements has been identified, the aim is observing how they have been cinematically adapted, transforming the tourist’s journey into an epic journey. At last, this is an attempt to highlight how the mimesis of tourist and hero can contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms of identification as tourist’s (Japanese) daydreams and fantasies are sublimated by main characters’ actions.
