Tang Our Contemporary: Twenty-First Century Adaptations of Peony Pavilion

This page provides access to performance photographs and video recordings of selected scenes from three stage productions by Zuni Icosahedron 進念 • 二十面體 (Hong Kong) that incorporate passages from Peony Pavilion (Mudan ting牡丹亭, 1598) by Tang Xianzu 湯顯祖 (1550–1616).

The productions are:

  • 1587, A Year of No Significance (Wanli shiwu nian 萬曆十五年, 2006);
  • Tang Xianzus Dream on Dreams (Linchuan simeng Tang Xianzu 臨川四夢湯顯祖, 2007);
  • Sigmund Freud in Search of Chinese Matter and Mind (Fuluoyide xunzhao Zhongguo qing yu shi 佛洛伊德尋找中國情與事, 2002).

These materials complement Rossella Ferrari’s chapter, “Tang Our Contemporary: Twenty-First Century Adaptations of Peony Pavilion”, in Passion, Romance, and Qing: The World of Emotions and States of Mind in Peony Pavilion, edited by Paolo Santangelo (Università di Roma, La Sapienza) and Tian Yuan Tan (SOAS, University of London) and published by Brill in 2014.
