Abstract

A functional-typological study on Korean relative clauses The aim of the research is to investigate the typological universals of relative clauses with reference to Korean, and to explore how morpho-syntactic and pragmatic factors interact with extra-linguistic factors in the interpretation of Korean noun-modifying clauses. The noun phrase accessibility hierarchy (NPAH) has been widely accepted to account for the acquisition difficulty of relative clause types. We argue that noun-modifying clauses in Korean are qualitatively different from those in European languages. We have maintained that Korean does not have relative clauses with a gap but, rather, have attributive clauses, which involve simply attaching modifying clauses to the head noun. With regard to NPAH, recent experimental studies on East Asian languages have shown conflicting results although those on European languages generally comply with the prediction of NPAH. In this study, a computer-assisted grammar test on Korean relative clauses has been conducted to test the typological universals of RCs in L2 Korean with typologically different L1 backgrounds (English, Japanese and Chinese). The result shows that Korean does not comply with NPAH illustrating the limitations of such a hierarchy. This paper also demonstrates that interpretation of Korean relative clauses depends on context and pragmatic factors. Semantico-pragmatic factors play important roles in acceptability judgments. We believe that this paper has successfully proven the significant role played by extra-linguistic factors in the interpretation of relative clauses in Korean. 이 글은 유형론적 관점에서 한국어 관계절의 유형과 관계화 가능성 위계, 그리고 관계절 해석의 의미 화용적 특성에 대해서 논의하였다. 관계절 연구에서 유형론적으로 흥미로운 문제 중 하나는 어떤 위치에서 관계화가 가능한가 하는 위계의 문제다. 한국어에서 핵어 명사의 관계화 제약은 대체로 키난과 콤리의 관계화 가능성 위계를 따르는 것으로 해석할 수 있지만 사격보어의 경우에는 단순하게 처리할 수 없는 복잡한 제약을 보여준다. 이 글에서는 제2언어습득에서 관계화 가능성 위계에 대한 기존 연구와 문제점에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 본 연구에서는 한국어 습득에 있어서 관계화 가능성 위계의 존재 여부를 확인하기 위해 한국어 학습자들을 대상으로 컴퓨터 프로그램을 사용하여 이해도 측정 실험을 실시하였다. 이 실험의 결과는 관계화 가능성 위계 가설에 부합하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 한국어 관계절에 대한 모어 화자와 학습자 집단들의 반응속도를 통해 알아본 난이도와 복잡성 실험에서 관계화 가능성 위계의 효과가 미약하거나 나타나지 않았다. 이 실험 결과는 한국어의 관계절은 유럽어의 관계절과 질적으로 다르다는 주장을 뒷받침해 줄 수 있다. 한국어는 공백(gap)을 포함한 관계절을 가지고 있다기보다는 오히려 단순히 한정적 관형절을 가지고 있기 때문에 한국어에서 명사구의 관계화 가능성은 문법적 관계가 아닌 의미적, 화용론적 요소들에 의해 결정된다고 주장하였다. 우리는 이러한 새로운 유형론에 비추어 한국어 관계절의 생성과 해석에 형태-통사적 정보뿐만 아니라 의미-화용론적인 정보가 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 구체적인 예를 통해 살펴보았다. 관계절에 대한 기존 연구들은 주로 관계절의 형태-통사론적인 특성에 집중되어 왔지만 관계절 해석에 영향을 미치는 통사 외적인 요소들에 대한 좀 더 깊이 있는 연구가 요구된다.
